On November 17, 1911, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was founded on the campus of Howard University. The founders of the fraternity decided on four cardinal principle by which all members of Omega should live by: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. Uplift is the fraternity’s commitment to have a positive influence on society and raise the condition of those less fortunate in the community. It is though the fraternity’s motto – “Friendship is essential to the soul” that the men of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity define the scope and depth of the diverse population of the people we serve.
Below are the social action/community service projects the men of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Pi Omega Chapter have committed to address such social issues of homelessness, hunger, domestic violence, breast cancer, prostate cancer, poverty, addiction and unemployment. These projects impact youth, elderly, disabled, and a cross section of race and culture. These projects have a geographic sphere that encompasses the international, national, and local communities.

Pi Omega’s “Staying Alive” Health Festival
Baltimore, MD. On Saturday, June 19, 2010, the brothers of Pi Omega Chapter hosted their “Staying Alive” health festival. The “Staying Alive” health festival was held outdoors on the premises of the Fraternity center and promoted health initiatives to the residents of Baltimore City. The festival offered residents free prostate cancer screenings sponsored by Chesapeake Urology Associates. Residents were also provided with free HIV screenings by Sisters Together and Reaching, Inc. and H1N1 vaccinations were provided by the Baltimore City Health Department. The Baltimore City Fire Department provided free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors as well as fire safety tips.
As a variety of services were being offered residents were also treated to a cookout and a step show from the men of Pi Omega Chapter. Additional musical entertainment was provided by Baltimore’s Magic 95.9 fm, Old School Productions, Inc., and the entire neighborhood came out to see the infamous New Edition Marching band.
The “Staying Alive” health festival proved to be a major success and provided services to those who normally would not be able to afford them. Pi Omega aims to make this an annual event in an effort to continue providing service to the neighborhood and surrounding community
Pi Omega Chapter Teams Up With Chesapeake Urology For The Great Prostate Cancer Challenege
Towson, MD. On September 26, 2010, the Chesapeake Urology Associates sponsored their 3rd Annual Great Prostate Cancer Challenge. The brothers of Pi Omega know that prostate cancer affects 200,000 plus men annually and prostate cancer is second only to skin cancer as the most common male cancer in the U.S. men aged 50 and older. In an effort to raise awareness of this illness in the African American community the brothers formed a team with several brothers walking and running the 5K event. The men of Pi Omega would not let the distance or the rain deter them from reaching their goal. Each brother persevered and finished the event while raising awareness and money for prostate cancer research.

Pi Omega Chapter Participates In The Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure
Hunt Valley, MD. - On October 3, 2010, the 18th Annual Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure was held. In an effort to spread awareness of breast cancer to the African-American community, the Brothers of Pi Omega Chapter volunteered their support to this cause. This year brothers’ participated by assisting with traffic control, directions, and parking. Participants of the race were truly appreciative to have Omega Men provide them with accurate details that made their journey to the race a pleasant one
Pi Omega’s Thanksgiving Feast Project
Baltimore, MD. On November 25, 2010, the Brothers of Pi Omega Chapter hosted their annual Thanksgiving Feast project. Since 2000, the Brothers of Pi Omega Chapter have traditionally held a Thanksgiving Day Feast at the Fraternity Center. The feast is held to feed the indigent and shut-in who live in the neighborhood surrounding the Fraternity Center. This year’s feast consisted of turkey, string beans, collared greens, rolls and a variety of other foods. Each individual who came for a meal was also provided with a bag of groceries to take with them to their home. The participants were also treated to the first appearance of “Santa Que” who helped spread the joy of thanksgiving and ushered in the Christmas spirit.
Since its inception, Pi Omega has fed over five hundred residents in the community. The brothers of Pi Omega take great pride in this project and this pride is also shared beyond the chapter. Each year the number of volunteers’ increases as friends and families of the chapter come out to support this great effort. This year the Brothers fed over four hundred-fifty people.
Pi Omega Chapter Supports Sarah's Hope
Baltimore, MD. On December 12, 2011, the Brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Pi Omega Chapter continued to upift the residents of Baltimore City. In an effort to help those during the holiday season the Brothers decided to spread the joy of the holidays with the residents of Sarah's House. Sarah's Hope is a 24 hour emergency shelter which provides services for women and children of Baltimore. The Brothers of Pi Omega Chapter helped these residents by providing Christmas gifts to the women and children of Sarah's Hope.
Pi Omega Chapter's Christmas Basket Giveaway
Baltimore, MD. - On December 18, 2010, the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Pi Omega Chapter hosted their annual Christmas Basket Giveaway program. This program provides food for less fortunate families within Baltimore during the holiday season. Brothers assembled and prepared baskets which included foods such as apples, oranges, bananas, bread, turkey, greens, cheese, and powdered drink mix. Several Brothers also volunteered to deliver these baskets to the homes of the residents who were unable to pick them up from the Pi Omega Fraternity Center.
Pi Omega Chapter Donates Winter Coats to the Powell Recovery Center
Baltimore, MD. - The afternoon of December 18, 2010, the brothers of Pi Omega Chapter continued to provide the less fortunate with the holiday spirit. At the conclusion of the Christmas basket giveaway the Brothers shifted their attention to the second program of the day. Throughout the fall season, the chapter has been collecting women’s and children’s coats. These coats were donated to the ladies of the Powell Recovery Center in Baltimore City. The ladies truly appreciated the coats provided to them by the chapter and the brothers left with a sense of fulfillment
